Nova Community Arts, founded by Rosie and Gray, is a queer-owned, community-focused center dedicated to providing arts education for adults in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
The studio is well-equipped with a variety of tools and materials to support creative work.
They host workshops and offer art classes for participants of all skill levels.

The MiScreen a4 is very easy to operate so anyone can operate without any special skills.
The screen-making process is completed just in 35sec.

Why did you start this studio?

We started the studio because we noticed a lack of spaces in LA that offered a wide range of art classes for adults.
Having previously taught together and enjoyed the experience, we decided to create a space ourselves.
I studied printmaking and art in college. After graduating, I attended school in Baltimore, where I discovered many places offering diverse printmaking opportunities.
However, when I moved to LA, I was surprised to find very few options for adult art classes, even though there were plenty available for children and teenagers.
In particular, I struggled to find places offering printmaking classes.
That’s why we decided to create this studio—to provide a variety of art classes specifically for adults.
It was important to us to create a welcoming space where adults could explore and develop their creativity.

When did you know RISOGRAPH and MiScreen a4?

The first time I saw RISOGRAPH printing was in 2018 at the LA Zine Fest.
I noticed the vibrant fluorescent pink prints everywhere.
I asked my boyfriend, “What is this? How do you print like this?”
He explained that these prints were made using RISOGRAPH.
When we opened the studio 3-4 years after the LA Zine Fest, we got a RISOGRAPH printer for people to use and also for us to learn how to use it ourselves.
We’ve been teaching RISOGRAPH printing for 3 years now, and it has become such a great community of artists.
As for the MiScreen A4, the local RISOGRAPH distributor told us about it.
I had studied screen printing in school, but in the traditional way.
When he explained this cool new machine, I thought, “That sounds amazing! It seems so much easier for students.”
So we decided to check it out and got one for the studio.

What is the good point of MiScreen a4?

I think one of the things that is best about it is how easy it is to use, it’s very straight forward and I think it is easy for students to be able to try it out.
Obviously once you learn how to do it, you can get more and more complicated.
So you can do lots of different stuff but I like that it’s easy to start for students.
